West Orange High School Announces Tyrone Curnell as the New Boys Basketball Coach

West Orange High School is proud to announce the hiring of Tyrone Curnell as the new Head Boys Basketball Coach, marking the return of a distinguished alumnus whose legacy as a student‑athlete continues to inspire the West Orange community.
A 2006 graduate of West Orange High School, Curnell was a standout member of the boys’ basketball program. During his four years as a Warrior, the team reached the playoffs every season and advanced to the 2005 State Final Four, cementing one of the most successful eras in program history.
After graduating, Curnell began his collegiate career at Jacksonville University before transferring to Seminole Community College, where he earned Player of the Year honors and was named a First Team All‑American. He completed his college career at Valdosta State University, achieving First Team All‑American recognition in both of his seasons there.
Curnell went on to build an extraordinary 16‑year professional basketball career overseas, competing in Portugal, Israel, Dubai, Kuwait, Argentina, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil. Over the course of his international career, he was part of seven championship teams, including four league titles in Brazil. His global experience also led him to become multilingual—Curnell speaks English, Portuguese, Spanish, Sign Language, and conversational Cambodian.
Following his retirement from professional basketball in 2025, Curnell returned home to West Orange High School, joining the staff as an ESE paraprofessional and serving as the assistant boys’ basketball coach. His transition into coaching reflects the same relentless drive, elite discipline, and unmatched work ethic that defined his playing career.
Curnell shared the core values he intends to instill in his program: “Winning teams work hard, stay disciplined, play all 40 minutes, and most importantly, enjoy playing for each other. I intend to create an environment where our team embodies those traits and appreciates the experience of being a student‑athlete at West Orange.”
West Orange High School also extends its sincere appreciation to Coach Eddie Johnson, who stepped down as head coach at the end of the season after four years of dedicated leadership. Coach Johnson will continue to serve the school as an outstanding member of the Language Arts department.
With deep roots in the community, a championship pedigree, and a passion for developing young athletes, Coach Tyrone Curnell begins a new chapter—one that promises to energize the program and inspire the next generation of Warriors.
